Profile - Michael Schrauben

Why did you choose to come to Exeter?

From its world-leading research to the excellent facilities and opportunities, the choice of coming to the University of Exeter truly is a no-brainer. As a member of the prestigious Russel group, Exeter boasts an impressive catalogue of achievements that caught my attention during my PhD project search and soon after, led to my application. After the interview and a tour of the campus, I was certain that the University of Exeter was the right choice.

Why have you chosen your subject of study?

I developed an interest for Epigenetics during my MRes degree in cancer biology. After completing my studies, I went on to search for a PhD that addressed this interest and found a project in the Complex Disease Epigenetics group. Studying dementia at the molecular level is fascinating and I hope to contribute to our understanding of this disease.

What career aspirations do you have?

Once I've finished this PhD, I'd like to continue working in academia as part of a research group interested in epigenetics. Moreover, I'd like to specialise in genome and epigenome editing tools to become an expert on all matters of genetic engineering. I have an affinity for ethics and science policy, which is why I'd like to get involved in the regulatory affairs affecting this area of science.

What will you be doing outside of study?

I hope to join some martial arts clubs to keep me physically active while I'm at Exeter. Additionally, I'd like to challenge myself by joining the debating society, an area of skill I'd like to improve.

What does receiving this scholarship mean to you and how will it impact on your time at Exeter and beyond?

Scholarships are a privilege few people get to benefit from and because of this, I feel honoured to have been awarded one. The financial support allows me to be independent and see myself as part of the work force, not simply a student living off of a debt I must repay. It gives me the certainty that what I love to study is also a means of cultivating a successful career. Moreover, I'm able to travel, live and enjoy myself thanks to the support of the scholarship.
