Profile - Fahmida Musarrat

Why did you choose to come to Exeter?

I have chosen to study at the University of Exeter for its location, growing diversity and early exposure to clinical practice for medical students. I value clinical practice and see it as an essential experience for students to understand early on how the NHS functions. My time here so far has been full of amazing social events with a variety of people, and security thanks to the strong support network.

Why have you chosen your subject of study?

I have chosen medicine with the goal of being part of the NHS as a healthcare practitioner, providing medical support to those in need. My subject of choice is oriented towards my ideal career pathway and academic interests. I am motivated on learning about the structures and functions of the body and how to alleviate problems that arise when such aspects are impaired.

What career aspirations do you have?

I would like to be flexible and take up roles in the following departments: humanitarian medicine, public health and the NHS as a medic but also as an activist to contribute ways to better health services nationally and globally. I believe it fundamental to ensure that access to healthcare is available for every individual when needed

What will you be doing outside of study?

I have gotten involved with the Islamic Society and Bangla Society, both being aligned with my personal values and beliefs that I wish to uphold during my time in Exeter. I am also interested in joining MedSoc, Friends of MSF and Amnesty International as a means of developing my interests in humanitarian medicine and strengthen my resolve as a healthcare practitioner. Outside of studies, I tutor KS3 students, assisting with exam support and offering career/personal development advice.

What does receiving this scholarship mean to you and how will it impact on your time at Exeter and beyond?

I believe this scholarship will allow me to access resources that will aid me in my studies such as books and essential equipment needed for my course. The scholarship will also provide me with enough support for my living expenses during my time at Exeter. I have been struggling with searching for faith friendly finances, this scholarship provides me relief from this issue and will alleviate the stress of compromising my religion for my education.
