Alice Orsman - University of Exeter Business School

Hello,

My name is Alice Orsman and I have been fortunate to have been awarded the inaugural Sir Steve Smith Scholarship in the University of Exeter Business School! I have just moved from East London to study Management and Marketing with a proficiency in Korean at Exeter.

My dream is to work in the cosmetics industry for big brands such as L’Oréal, which is where I am aspiring to go to for my year in industry. I am also half-Japanese so I would love to work in both Japan and Korea after I become more fluent in Korean.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your donation and your generosity, which has made these opportunities more achievable for me and will no doubt enable me to make the most of my university experience. When I received the news that I was receiving the award, I was speechless. Words cannot describe my gratitude. Thank you.

Best Regards,

Alice

Profile - Alice Orsman

Why did you chose to come to the University of Exeter?

I loved the course that Exeter offered. In addition, the campus is absolutely stunning and the area is safe. There's also an amazing sense of community in Exeter which I could not find at any other university I visited.

Why have you selected your chosen subject of study?

I have always been interested in the psychological relationship between product and consumer. I am also heavily interested in cosmetics and the creative business side therefore, marketing was the perfect course for me.

What career aspirations do you have?

I aspire to do a year in industry at L'Oreal in my 3rd year of study. After graduating, I would love to work there for a few years and perhaps move to the Japan's L'Oreal headquarters. I would love to work in both Japan and Korea for some part of my career.

What will you be doing outside of study?

I have signed up to several societies; fashion, Japanese, art and the Women in Business societies. I also plan on joining the Taekwondo society after having participated in a trial session.

What does this scholarship mean to you and how will it impact your time at Exeter and beyond?

This scholarship has lifted all my worries about money and the constant anxiousness I was feeling just by thinking about how I was going to be able to support myself throughout my studies. With the support of this award I now know that I do not need to do as many paid work shifts during the week, which is a big relief as it allows me to focus on my studies and achieving my goals.
