Alexander Wood - College of Humanities

Dear Donors,

My name is Alexander Wood, I am from North Yorkshire and am studying Theology and Religion with the hope of completing a year of employment experience abroad in my third year of study.

I would like to thank you so much for your contribution to my studies and cannot even begin to explain the huge weight that has been lifted from me thanks to your generosity. I spent a fair amount of my secondary education out of school or in hospital and always questioned whether I would make it to university and be able to manage living away from home, but with your incredible contribution - I can now say that I am confident I will be able to complete my degree.

I plan to use your contribution to fund the costs of taking the year abroad, as well as supporting my studies generally with costs such as textbooks. The scholarship will also enable me to travel to visit my family back home, to get support from them if needed. It is reassuring to know I can now do this more freely without having to worry about the cost, given the distance.

I look forward to keeping you up to date with the progress of my degree and personal development during my time at Exeter.

Thank you once again,

Kind regards,

Alexander

Scholar Profile

Why did you chose to come to the University of Exeter?

Exeter was the strongest option for the specific degree I wanted to do and the course had great module options. Having lived in the north my entire life and never having been further south than London - it was a nice change of scenery.

Why have you selected your chosen subject of study?

I chose to study Theology and Religion as I am greatly interested in the development of religious beliefs throughout history and have a particular interest in smaller religions that have had very limited reach and remain relatively unchanged despite being extremely ancient.

What career aspirations do you have?

I think at the moment I am interested in an academic career but I am looking into certain pathways that could lead to employment opportunities within intergovernmental organisations or non profit organisations.

What will you be doing outside of study?

I have signed up to multiple societies but I believe I am most enthusiastic about the Debating Society and my Archery Club membership. Outside of study I enjoy watching films, as well as reading around history and politics.

What does this scholarship mean to you and how will it impact your time at Exeter and beyond?

Being awarded this scholarship means I am able to focus solely on my studies as well as my general wellbeing without the worry of being burdened with unexpected financial costs throughout my studies. It also means I am able to reach for opportunities that I otherwise could not have facilitated.
