Sanctuary Scholars Programme

Prepared for Nick Hungerford (Business & Management, 2002)

Our Sanctuary Scholarship programme launched in 2017. The scholarship provides a full tuition fee waiver and living costs support to students who have sought asylum in the UK, have limited leave to remain, ‘humanitarian protection’ or refugee status, and International Care Leavers and whose immigration status prevents them from accessing support from Student Finance. The programme also provides enhanced pastoral support and mentoring from current and previous recipients of the award, who have shared experiences.

Each year we award a minimum of 3 scholarships – two to undergraduate applicants and one for study at PhD level. Since the start of the scheme we have awarded a total of 14 scholarships. So far, awards have been given to students of the following nationalities: Syria, Palestine, Afghanistan, Libya, Nigeria, India and Mexico.

Thanks to generous philanthropic support we have been able to extend the number of awards offered enabling more talented asylum seekers and refugees the opportunity to receive quality higher education here in the UK. A further 4 students have accepted scholarship offers to start in September 2021.

Thank you for your support.
