Profile - Tobias Carroll

Why did you choose to come to Exeter?

I chose Exeter because it is a very well-regarded institution and the modules on offer on my programme were of particular interest to me. Also, I love Devon, Dartmoor and the West Country in general.

Why have you chosen your subject of study?

My love of history has been a lifetime obsession, I suppose. I have always been interested in the past. It is a form of escapism in a way, but it can also explain a great deal about the present.

What career aspirations do you have?

I think I'd like to work with the National Trust, or English Heritage, organisations which preserve landscapes as well as artefacts.

What will you be doing outside of study?

I'm considering joining the History Society, to supplement my studies but also the Out of Doors Society to see more of the local countryside and enjoy a break from academic work.

What does receiving this scholarship mean to you and how will it impact on your time at Exeter and beyond?

The impact of having this scholarship is huge! It means I don't have to hold down a job while I study, and I can just focus on my work. Hopefully that will result in a better grade overall, and give me a boost in the first steps of my career, so it will continue to benefit me for a long time beyond my degree.
